Background: The DnaJ family is one of the largest of all the chaperone families and has evolved with diverse cellular localization and functions. The presence of the J domain defines a protein as a member of the DnaJ family. DnaJ proteins are important mediators of proteolysis and are involved in the regulation of protein degradation, exocytosis and endocytosis. DnaJC11 (DnaJ homolog subfamily C member 11) is a 559 amino acid protein that may be implicated in protein import. The gene encoding DnaJC11 maps to human chromosome 1, which spans 260 million base pairs, contains over 3,000 genes and comprises nearly 8% of the human genome. There are three isoforms of DnaJC11 that are produced as a result of alternative splicing events.
