Background: CYP24A1 (cytochrome P450, family 24, subfamily A, polypeptide 1) is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily. It is a mitochondrial enzyme responsible for inactivating vitamin D3 metabolites through the C-24 oxidation pathway. In regulating the level of vitamin D3, CYP24A1 plays a role in calcium homeostasis and the vitamin D endocrine system. CYP24A1 also has a role in maintaining calcium homeostasis. It catalyzes the NADPH-dependent 24-hydroxylation of 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) in the presence of adrenodoxin and NADPH-adrenodoxin reductase.
