Background: Parafibromin is encoded by the endocrine tumor suppressor gene CDC73 (cell division cycle 73, Paf1/RNA polymerase II complex component), alternatively known as the HRPT2 (hyperparathyroidismjaw tumor syndrome 2) gene. Parafibromin is a tumor suppressor involved in transcriptional and post-transcriptional control pathways, such as cell cycle progression through the regulation of cyclin D1/PRAD1 expression. Defects in parafibromin are the cause of parathyroid gland tumors.
