Background: Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for the MTUS1 (Mitochondrial tumor suppressor 1) gene. One of the transcript variants has been shown to encode a mitochondrial protein that acts as a tumor suppressor and cooperates with the angiotension II (AT2) receptor (AGTR2) to inhibit ERK2 activation and cell proliferation. MTUS1 polypeptides are identical in their carboxy-terminal region carrying four coiled-coil domains. In their amino-terminal portion, MTUS1 polypeptides exhibit distinct motifs for localisation in the cytosol, nucleus or cell membrane, suggesting that MTUS1 gene products may be involved in a variety of intracellular functions in an AT2-dependent and independent manner.
