Background: KAT13D/CLOCK, a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH)/PAS protein, is an important factor in the molecular clock mechanism. Mutations in this protein lead to abnormal circadian behaviour and defective transcriptional activity. KAT13D / CLOCK has been shown to interact strongly with other bHLH-PAS proteins such as MOP3, a BMAL1 isoform. KAT13D has been shown to act as a histone acetyltransferase.
