Background: Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of an alpha chain and a beta chain. ITGA7 encodes integrin alpha chain 7. Integrin alpha 7 undergoes post translational cleavage within the extracellular domain resulting in disulfide linked light and heavy chains that join with beta 1. Integrin alpha 7/beta 1 is the primary laminin receptor on skeletal myoblasts and adult myofibers. Expression of the alpha 7 integrin gene (ITGA7) is developmentally regulated during the formation of skeletal muscle.
