Background: This is one of the several different receptors for 5-HT, a biogenic hormone that functions as a neurotransmitter, a hormone, and a mitogen. The activity of this receptor is mediated by G proteins that inhibit adenylate cyclase activity. The 5-HT1E receptor is expressed in human cortex, caudate, putamen, and amygdala, as well as in dorsal root ganglia and in coronary artery. ESTs have been isolated from human brain cancer libraries.
