Background: PHKA1, the alpha subunit of muscle phosphorylase kinase, is a key regulatory enzyme of glycogen metabolism. The phosphorylase kinase consists of 4 copies of an alpha-beta-gamma-delta tetramer and catalyzes the phosphorylation of serine in certain substrates, including troponin I. PHKA1 may bind calmodulin.
